Walk in the Way of the Lord
Well – this morning as I was sitting at my computer, the phrase “Walk in the way of the Lord” popped into my head (as did the song Walk this Way by Aerosmith).
So, I Googled “Bible Walk in the Way of the Lord”
I think that it must be important, because what came back was a number of different verses from various books within the Bible.
There was Psalm 81:13 – “Oh that my people would listen to me. That Israel would walk in my ways!” (and also Psalm 119:3, and 121:8)
And Zechariah 3:7 – “Thus says the Lord of hosts, ‘If you will walk in My ways and if you will perform My service, then you will also govern My house and have charge of My courts, and I will grand you free access among these who are standing here.”
Also Deuteronmy 19:9 – “If you carefully observe all this commandment which I command you today, to love the Lord your God, and to walk in His ways always – then you shall add three more cities for yourself, besides these three.”
And Micah 4:2 – “Many nations will come and say, ‘Come and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord and to the house of the God of Jacob, that He may teach us about His ways and that we may walk in His paths.’”
If it is important to God, it’s important to me – so how do I begin to "walk in His ways"
Well, first of all - I think that in order to do that - I would need to walk WITH Him. Matthew 11:29-30 confirms this when it says, "Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."
On a farm, the farmer will yoke a young ox with an older one so that the younger one may learn while the older ox does most of the "heavy lifting." This is the same way the Lord wants to teach us. He wants us to walk WITH Him so He can teach us, and we can grow strong and wise.
Further, I know that walking is something we do step-by-step. Similarly, the Christian life is a day-by-day process. To walk with God requires that we spend time with Him daily; reading His word, sharing our hopes, dreams and fears, and petitioning Him for His strength and guidance.
And finally, since walking is a form of exercise, and we know we must exercise faithfully to see physical results, it stands to reason that we must walk with God faithfully to see spiritual results.
The Bible promises that God loves us, cares for us, guides us and offers His strength and power. However, I would think that doing so would be much easier if we were walking WITH Him, than if we were walking without Him, or worse yet – walking AWAY from Him.
