The Slipstream

Until this morning, I had no solid idea about what a "slipstream" was.  However, since God popped the word into my head with the notion, "write about it" - I looked it up.

"A slipstream is the flow of air or water behind a moving object that enables another object when in close proximity behind it, to move effortlessly in its motion..."

Right now - I feel God very clearly asking me to "Get in my slipstream..."

Okay God, but what does that MEAN, and how the heck do I do it!?

As always, Google to the rescue.

When I googled "God's slipstream" I found that this concept is not something He spoke solely to me.  There were no less than five results that mentioned "GOD" and "SLIPSTREAM" in the same article.

One, written by people named Nate and Christy, is titled "Stepping into the Slipstream of Your Transition."  It suggests that to be in the slipstream we must:  A) be following the "right" object, and, B) be very close.  They suggest that "as we stop being distracted by everything else wanting our attention and pursue only Him, we will not only step into His slipstream where it's no longer in our own strength, but we will also experience the acceleration we have been praying for."  Hmmmm - interesting. God's slipstream enables me to experience His power, and gets me where I'm supposed to be, faster.

The second article was by a woman named Laurie Haller, a bishop in the United Methodist Church.  As she was talking about slipstreams, she mentioned geese flying in a V formation, and said that by doing so they can add up to 71% more to their flying range than if they were flying alone.

Laurie said that on a hike we walk behind someone who moves away branches and warns us about rocks.  When we cross country ski - we let the lead person cut the trail.  And when we are part of a caravan we don't have to use a map.  She says that when we live in the slipstream of God - we recognize Jesus as our leader and know it is He "who blazed the trail for us, living out God's call by teaching, preaching, loving, and serving."  Okay - this is making sense.  When I'm in God's slipstream I recognize He is my leader and I concentrate on following Him.

A third article by Harvester Church suggests that when Jesus said, "follow me" he was asking us to get into His slipstream.  It said that "Jesus knows where He is going. And He knows where He is leading us."  Further, it says that "If you follow someone, you learn from them.  You learn from their example.  If you follow Jesus you learn from His commitment, obedience, willingness, compassion, authority, grace and how to do God's will."  Excellent.  Being in God's slipstream means I am constantly learning from Him, and becoming more like Him.

The fourth article was from a Canadian church in Halliburton. It concluded that the most important piece of being in God's slipstream is in "listening to the whisper of the spirit."  Okay - so when we are in the slipstream, the Holy Spirit will speak to us.

And the final article was from Risk Church in New Zealand.  Their Pastor Rob was recorded talking about "How to Get Into God's Prophetic Slipstream".  He claimed that when God gives us a verse of scripture or a word (example - He put SLIPSTREAM into my head this morning) we need to pray and meditate over it.  Pastor Rob said it's because God is watching over that word - and "He wants YOU to carry it forward".  Okay - this follows along quite nicely, when we're in the slipstream the things we hear from God are ones He wants us to share with others.

Yes, I think God wants us in his slipstream.  He wants to  show us the way, and to guide us into the future He has prepared for us.  He wants us to experience Him, his qualities and His power, He wants to be able to speak to us, and have us confidently speak to others (about Him).  And we can do all of that, by spending time with Him, and letting Him lead.

"Again Jesus spoke to them saying, 'I am the light of the world.  Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." - John 8:11
