Love God. Love People

At my church we have a 16 word "mission"

Wake the world up to Jesus. Show them his love. Tell them His truth. Involve them.

It's so simple and beautiful, but its power comes from the order of the sentences.

We live in a world that is increasingly divided, and though it is EASY to love the people that love us back, loving the unlovable - the people who hate us or torment us, the people who are rude to us or whose views and opinions are opposite our us - well, that's when things become very difficult.  But that's exactly what Jesus calls us to do.

In the Bible book of Matthew some of the church leadership asked, "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the law?"

Jesus replied, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.  This is the first and greatest commandment.  And the second is like it, Love your neighbor as yourself.  All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commands".

In First Corinthians we learn that without love we are but a "clasing gong or a clanging symbol".

So how do we love the unlovable?  We can start by praying for them, and by asking God to open our eyes and show us how He sees them.  It may take a little while, but I believe this first step will soften our hearts, and give us the ability to brighten our world.
