One Step at a Time

Chinese philosopher, Lao Tsu, once said, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step…”  I always loved that quote, and even wore it on my shirts when I used to walk in the Komen 60-mile 3 Day.  Today, I thought about how that quote applies to my relationship with God.

When I first turned my life over to Him, it was a quiet, and very personal surrender.  In fact, I remember actively avoiding talking to people about my faith, because I didn’t want to be judged.

A little later I remember thinking about the Christian martyrs I'd read about in the Bible, and the current-day martyrs in other countries; and feeling like, “as long as no one was threatening to cut off body parts, I could probably be strong in my faith, but as soon as that started happening, it'd be a whole different story!!!".

But I’ve said it before, and the longer I go in my walk with Him, the more convinced I am that it’s true – God plays the long game.

Initially, He just wants you to Believe.

Then, He asks you to Trust.

Then, He wants you to Love.

Then, He prompts you to Follow.

Next, you’ll start to Proclaim.

And at some point, you might even begin to Fish.

When you begin to seek God, He'll take you by the hand and lead you step by step.  Your development will be gradual, with your relationship deepening through every fulfilled promise, and each answered prayer.

Eight years ago, there is NO WAY I would be getting up early every morning (or in this case staying up late) to post in a blog about God.  But now, I want EVERYONE to understand why I’m so passionate about Him, and how He’s changed my life.

YES - God plays the long game, and He wants to go with you on that "thousand mile journey" Lao Tsu talked about.  However, it's up to YOU to take the first step!

"I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Jesus Christ.” – Philippians 1:6 (MEV)
