THE END OF ME
There is a book written by a pastor/author named Kyle Edelman, called “The End of Me.”
The book starts with a letter to himself. I’ve edited it down a
little for space but this is the gist:
“Dear Me,
I’ve known you as long as I can remember, and yes, we have quite an attachment.
Looking back, it’s fair to say I’ve treated you pretty well. As a matter of fact,
more times than I can count I’ve put you ahead of anything and everything else,
agreed?
it was easier to keep you happy when you were a little tyke - a
simple temper tantrum would get the job done. But as we grew older I
had to be more discreet. Making sure you kept winning and getting your way - all the while
looking humble and unassuming. That gets tricky! Not to mention tiring.
I love you Me, but I can’t keep living for you. I’ve let you be in
control and sit in the driver’s seat but it’s clear you can’t be trusted. You keep insisting you
know the way we should go, but it always seems to be a dead end. I’ve looked into some
other options, and I have decided to begin a journey down a different
path. It’s narrow and difficult and not many choose it, but it leads to a
real and abundant life. However - and there is no easy way to say this - I can’t take this
path if I bring you along. So Me, this is the end of you.
Sincerely,
Me"
Jim and I have talked about this concept a lot.
God wants to fill you up with the rich full life He planned for you,
but He can’t do that when you’re not empty. It would be like
pouring fresh cream into a cup that has some dregs of stale beer….
As long as we keep putting ourselves ahead of Him, our wants and
desires ahead of His, we are trapped.
The illusion is that this is OUR life, and that as such WE should be
the ones that control the direction. The TRUTH is, our lives
are His. He granted them, He permits them, and He paid for them.
“…You are not your own, for you were bought with a price.” - 1
Corinthians 6:19-20
If your life isn’t all you want it to be, maybe it’s FINALLY time to
say “goodbye” to Me.
