Martha, Martha, Martha!
(As I write that I can hear Jan Brady
lamenting about something her sister has done… ๐).
There is a story in the Bible book of Luke that is speaking to me today. It is one in which Jesus and his disciples have found themselves at the home of their friends, Martha, Mary and Lazarus.
Because there is a crowd, Martha goes about busying herself with the tasks necessary to house and feed them. However, her sister Mary its listening to Jesus and his teachings – not helping with the work.
The Bible says this: “But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked ‘Lord don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!’
‘Martha, Martha,’ the Lord answered, ‘you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed – or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better and it will not be taken away from her.’” (Luke 10:40-42)
I think the reason this story is rattling around in my brain this morning, is because for the past two weeks I have done a LOT of hard work – digging, pruning, planting and shoveling manure – HOWEVER I haven’t done a very good job of listening to Jesus. My once bountiful “stash” of future blog posts has dwindled to one. Just like Martha, I have been distracted.
First and foremost, God wants us to have a heart for HIM. He wants us to recognize the distractions, and keep our focus on His word, His teachings, and His plans for us.
