The Sheep is On Fire...

Scott Cunningham is a powerful preacher.  He and his family moved to Nicaragua from Michigan over a decade ago as missionaries, working with the Amigos for Christ organization.  Yesterday, Scott he did a morning devotional that really struck a chord with me – so I thought I’d share…(note – I’ll paraphrase a little here)

There is this guy in the Bible called Moses, maybe you’ve heard of him…as a baby, he was the adopted son of Pharoah, the most powerful guy in Egypt; and all he had to do to live a comfortable life for the rest of his life - was NOT SCREW IT UP.  But one day Moses saw an Egyptian beating an Israelite, and being an Israelite himself, it disturbed Moses to the point that he killed the Egyptian.  That caused him to have to run from Egypt into the hill country where he was a shepherd for the next 40 years.

Now a shepherd is a pretty boring job.  All you do is sit out in the field and count the sheep (maybe the dumbest animal on the planet).  So, there Moses is, counting:

One, two, three, four five…

One, two, three, four, five.

One, two, bush is on fire, three four five.

One, two, bush is on fire, sheep is on fire, three, four, five…

And at this point Moses noticed that the bush that had been burning for a while, wasn’t being burned up, so he went to investigate… and THIS is when God said to him, “Moses, I have a job for you to do – I want you to lead my people out of Egypt.”

Scott ends by reminding everyone that someone once said, maybe we all have burning bushes in our lives – spots where God is waving his arms saying, “Hey, come here - I’ve got something for you…” and the key is to NOT miss those moments because we’re too busy counting sheep.

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” – Ephesians 2:10
