Leeches!
It is interesting to me to think of some of the things that the "science" of the day used to have us doing. Leeches for example. When someone was sick, the "doctor" would pull out the jar of leeches and attach them to the patient to draw out the "bad blood".
And yet, if I read the Bible I see things in there that defy the science of the day, and I think would have ONLY been possible if indeed that Book was divinely inspired. For example:
Historically, many people believed that the Earth sat on the back of a large animal or giant. However, before science discovered the truth in 1650 A.D., the book of Job (written 1500 years BEFORE Christ, said this: "He stretches out the north over empty space; He hangs the earth upon nothing." (Job 26:7)
Next, it was the Greek Philosophers who are credited with first concluding that the Earth was round. Erastosthenes, Aristotle and Pythagoras all wrote about this theory as early as 500 B.C., but the book of Isaiah, written hundreds of years before they were even born said this: "It is He who sits about the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers, who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads the out like a tent to dwell in." (Isaiah 40:22)
And, while every student in elementary school now learns about the water cycle, how THAT all worked really wasn't discovered until the 1670s when Pierre Perault and Edme Marriotte put the theory forth. But Job 26:8 says this, "He wraps up the waters in the clouds, yet the clouds do not burst under their weight.", and Job36:27-28 says, "He draws up the drops of water, which distill as rain to the streams, the clouds pour down their moisture and abundant showers fall on mankind."
Finally, in the 1800s, a man named Matthew Maury, considered the "founder of oceanography" was curious about this verse, "The birds of the heavens and the fish of the sea, whatever passes through the paths of the seas." (Psalm 8:8) He decided to investigate the "paths of the seas", and it was Matthew who discovered the warm and cold continental currents.
When you start looking at the Bible as fact - rather than a collection of stories designed to make us be "good", things change. What if Adam and Eve is true? The garden of Eden, true? The plagues of Egypt - true? Lazarus raised from the dead - true? And Jesus dying for our sins, then rising from the dead to make it possible for US to be with God in eternity - TRUE!!!
When we see the Bible for what it is - recorded TRUTH - it has the power to change EVERYTHING. However, we cannot know its power until we spend time reading it.
There is a great app I like to use that helps me dig in to each chapter and verse and understand. It is called Through the Word, and today I urge you to download the app, and start making time with God's word a priority in your day..
