Water from a Rock

Genesis 17 has the Israelites roaming the desert after God delivered them from the hands of the Egyptians.  He accomplished this by sending plagues and parting the Red Sea.

Now, they have been eating manna (bread from heaven), and recently - because they complained of not having meat - God sent an abundance of quail.

In chapter 17 they are without water and are once again grumbling.  The chapter records them ask saying to Moses, "give us water to drink".

So Moses spoke to God and this is what He said, "Go out in front of the people.  Take with you some of the elders of Israel and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go.  I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb.  Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink." - Exodus 17:5-6

Can you imagine?  Water from a rock?

And yet GOD DID IT!!!!

---

Today, in the Nicaraguan community of San Benito where I spent 7 weeks working this past summer, they will be turning on the water.  This will mean that instead of having to haul water up from a dirty well, or carry it home from a source far from home - community members will be able to turn on a spigot and get clean, fresh water for the first time ever.

I suspect to those who live there, being able to do so will feel like no less of a miracle than water from a rock.

And because Amigos for Christ will be livestreaming it (see below for instructions on how to watch.) at around 2pm EST, I will be watching.

The risk in all of this - is pride.

For just like it was God, not Moses, who brought water out of the rock at Mt. Horeb - it is God who will be turning on the water in San Benito.

It is God who brought John and Sabrina Bland to Nicaragua years ago, and gave them the soft hearts which enabled them to see the need.  It is God who staffed Amigos for Christ with such a beautiful caring team - one that works hard EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. for the good of the people in Chinandega.  It was God who stirred the hearts of the many volunteers who donated money and time to make today's celebration a reality.  And it was God who blessed the volunteers who worked digging ditches and laying water lines with the funding for their mission trips.

San Benito - God loves you (we all do too), and I will be SOOO happy to watch as today you experience it!

Congratulations!
