Happy Birthday Jim!
Today, is Jim's birthday - and he is 60. (I find it hard to believe I am married to a man THAT old!!! Actually, I find it hard to believe that I AM THAT OLD!)
On Monday, the staff of Frego and Associates had a surprise party for Jim. To keep him from leaving the office early they told him there was a difficult case coming in at 5pm and they asked if he could take it. Knowing that Jim likes a challenge, and that he doesn't shy away from difficult cases, it was the perfect ruse to get him to stay.
Maybe this will surprise you - but when Jim was younger, he was quite egotistical. In fact he often told me that when we "grew up" he was going to be the President. I'm certain he envisioned himself behind a big desk in the Oval Office - Commander in Chief and Leader of the Free World! To him I suppose, that seemed the only job BIG ENOUGH for his talent!
Years later however, when we reconnected, such was NOT the case.
Instead, Jim was working as a bankruptcy attorney. And although he wasn't running the free world, and his pay was less than what other attorneys might make, he was happy because he was helping people in what was often the most difficult "season" of their lives. Jim had found his purpose! Because somewhere along the line, HELPING PEOPLE became more important than money, more important than a big title or a fancy office and more important than running the country.
Jeremiah 1:5 tells us that God knew us before we were born, and that He created us with a purpose. Proverbs 19:21 says "Many are the plans in a person's heart, but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails", and Ephesians 2:10 says, "For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."
Jim has found his purpose: it is to work on the difficult cases, and to help people who are struggling financially find the best solution. He knows it. His staff knows it - and God knew it all along!
The simple fact is - if we are to live the life that God has planned for us - we must work to discern His purpose for our lives. It starts with figuring out the unique talents and abilities He has given us, and then finding the roles in which we might use them.
