Here's Your Sign...

A few years ago Jeff Foxworthy, Bill Engvall, Ron White and Larry the Cable Guy were part of a thing they called the "Blue Collar Comedy Tour".  If you can find it "on demand" watch it - it's a hoot.

Anyway, for me, Ron White and Bill Engvall stood out with their sharp and witty comedy.  And it was Bill's "Here's Your Sign" schtick I really enjoyed.

Bill says people who ask silly questions should have to wear a sign so we all know what we're dealing with when we interact with them.  And the premise of his jokes is always that  in response to something that should have been absolutely obvious someone ask a silly question that, if they'd thought about it, they wouldn't have asked...then in response, another person points out the absurdity by offering a smart alec response and then says, "Here's Your Sign".

For example - Bill tells a story of a time when his son came into the room and said, "Hey Dad, I want to play you a song on the piano.  Bill responded, "Hey great" and went into the room where the piano was.  His son then sat down at the piano and said - "I'm going to play you a song from Harry Potter," and Bill said - "Oh cool - the movie?"  To which his son replied - "No - the book...here's your sign!"

Wouldn't it be awesome if we could count on signs from God to direct our every step - but the Bible says, "We walk by faith, not by sight" (2 Cor. 5:7), and I think for the most part - that is true.

But there is another story in the book of John 6 where Jesus is talking to a crowd of people who have followed Him after He miraculously fed 5000.  They ask, "What sign with You perform then, that we may see and believe You?  What work will You do?  Our fathers ate the manna in the desert, as it is written, 'He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'" (John 6:30-31)

Isn't that incredible?  I mean these people started following Him no doubt because they had heard of His miraculous signs or seen Him perform them.  His disciples had seen Him walk on water - but still they ask for a sign.  Do they really need MORE evidence to believe?

Monday night I watched the Lions game on TV.  At one point, as the kicker was lining up for a field goal the cameraman panned the crowd - and there on national tv, was an enormous neon yellow sign with the words, John 3:16.

I think it is God's answer to all those people who ask, "Does God really exist? And if so, does He love me?"

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." (John 3:16)
