Sheeple

Today I saw an interesting news clip.  It was of a bunch of protestors, and when the newsman asked one of the young students WHY he was protesting, the kid could NOT articulate an answer, and in watching him I thought "he's a sheeple!"

There term "SHEEPLE" is defined in Miriam Webster's dictionary as those who behave like sheep and are docile, compliant and easily influenced.

I think a lot of people in the world are sheeple these days.  A website titled sheep101info talks about "sheepish" behavior, and as I read it I can see where the term might be accurate.  For example

  • Sheep tend to "follow the leader" even if the leader does not make good choices.  The site says sheep will follow one another to slaughter, and if the lead sheep were to jump off a cliff, chances are others would follow.  SHEEPLE tend to do the same.  They will let what someone else does, what is "popular" in terms of morals and values, dictate their own.
  • Sheep stick together and become highly agitated when they are separated from the group.  SHEEPLE are the same.  For them, the common "narrative" is the one they follow, but too many sheeple do not research or investigate - so when you separate them from the group, and ask that they discuss their position - they cannot, because quite honestly, they don't really know what or why they believe what they do (such was the case with the young man in the interview).
  • Sheep101info says sheep do not walk in a straight line. It claims that because sheep eyes are on either side of their heads, their winding trails enable them to see their backsides first from one side, then from the other.  Lots of SHEEPLE do not walk a straight line" either.  They tend to go where the wind blows and will not question the narrative, even when the truth is staring them in the face.
In a world full of sheeple, I must admit that I am a sheeperson too.  However, unlike the sheeple described above, my shepherd is not one of this world.  He is the alpha and the omega, the beginning and the end.  He sees my world in ways I cannot, and I TRUST Him to lead me on the path that is good.

John 10 offers a beautiful description of what it means to be a sheep in Jesus' flock -
"My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.  I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand." - John 10:27-28

In a world full of sheeple - the trick is choosing the right shepherd.
