Mary or Martha?
Each day two of my friends send a daily inspiration via text. From Tom, I get a Bible verse, and from Abb, a daily devotion that he gets from his friend, Deb Joy.
Every Single Day! What love! What a blessing!
Anyway - from Abb, one of the devotionals I got this week struck me to the core. It read:
Are you a Mary or a Martha? "But Martha was busy with all the work to be done. She went in and said, 'Lord, don't you care that my siste has left me alone to do all the work? Tell her to help me." - Luke 10:40
Martha loved Jesus dearly and would have done anything for him. Her struggle came in being still! I can certainly relate to this scripture. The harder I work before entertaining, the more frustrated I become at my mother for not giving me a sister! I find that the more activity that consumes me, the less time I have for what is most important...spending time with Christ."
Yep, that's me too! And it's why the message hit so deeply.
Satan is crafty - he wants to keep us away from God, and he uses ways that are tailored for each individual person. For me, he knows I love people. He knows I love entertaining. And he'll help me conjure up a "to do list" that is ridiculous and impossible, and will certainly make entertaining and the "perfect" whatever (meal, decorations, holiday wrapping, clean house, etc.), become the god of my life.
So, this holiday season, I commit to putting time with God first. For taking a break from the various tasks around the house that "have" to be done, and instead - siting at the feet of Jesus, and listening to what He has to say.
