What Do You Want?
Mark 10 verses 46-52 tells a story about a man named Bartimaeus receiving his sight.
In the story, Jesus and his disciples are leaving the city of Jericho when they see a blind man begging at the side of the road. When the beggar hears that it is Jesus of Nazareth who is about to pass him by, he begins to shout, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me". Many in the crowd told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more and so Jesus stopped and said, "Call him".
When the man was before Jesus, Jesus asked, "What do you want me to do for you?," to which the blind man replied, "Rabbi, I want to see."
Then, "Go," said Jesus, "your faith has healed you" and immediately the man received his sight.
Now of course Jesus KNEW that Bartimaeus was blind. He KNEW that he would be there begging at the gate, and he KNEW that Bartimaeus wanted to see. But sometimes Jesus wants us to ASK.
Just like Bartimaeus Jesus wants us to cry out for him and to boldly ask for the things we need.
"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. Or hat man is there among you who, when his son asks for a loaf, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, he will not give him a snake, will he? If you then though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!" - Matthew 7:7-11
