(don't) FOLLOW YOUR HEART

I saw something someone posted the other day that said this...

"Follow your heart" has ended more marriages, caused more addictions, mutilated more bodies, destroyed more souls, and ended more lives than Satan ever imagined.  It is one of hell's most effective slogans.  Don't follow your heart, follow the One who created it."

True.

The devil loves it when we follow our hearts because our hearts are fickle.  Our hearts are "self-serving" rather than God-serving.  Our hearts focus on our own needs and wants, whereas God wants us to put those aside, as we LOVE Him, and SERVE others.

Yesterday's date verse says this:  "Be devoted to one another in love.  Honor one another above yourselves." - Romans 12:10

That's often very hard to do...especially if we allow our hearts to get involved.

Honoring one another translates to SERVING one another.  Even when we don't feel like it.

In relationships this is often so very difficult.

Yesterday, Jim and I were in a bit of a fight because both of us wanted what we wanted.  For me it was the re-doing of some work that had already been done.  For him, it was some relaxation after a long and taxing week.

My selfish heart didn't care about his tough week.  My selfish heart wanted what it wanted...and it was angry because Jim didn't see things "my way."

So, grumbling and mumbling I went out to do what I thought WE should be doing.  And in my frustrated state, I was angry with him.

But Jim has a heart of service.  And even though he desperately wanted to just REST a little, he put on his boots and his warm winter coat, and after a few minutes came out to help me finish the job.  He said he did it because he loved me.

That's what love is.

First Corinthians 13 tells us REAL love is "not self-seeking," but that is "patient, and kind" and that it "always protects, always trusts, always hopes" and "always perseveres."

Thank you God for giving me a husband who remembers that honoring one another means serving one another...please help me to remember that lesson as well.
