The "Right" Job
My son Max is in college. As a mom, I hope to be able to keep him from making some of the same mistakes I did...
As a 60 year old parent however, I know that probably isn't possible, as most adults determinedly feel their own way in this world - not caring for the advice of their stodgy old parents, but rather preferring to figure it out on their own...
HOWEVER, if I DID have his ear - I'd tell him to find an area of study that makes his heart full. One that comes naturally because his skills and abilities are a good fit for it.
For me, my major was chosen because I am inherently lazy. When it came time to choose, I added up the credits I had in each of my fields of study, and because Business/Marketing had the most - that became my major.
Did I like it? I liked it okay.
Did I have a knack for it - a bit.
But were there other fields and areas of study that might have been a better fit? Definitely! Things like communication, hospitality, or kindergarten teacher. Jobs where I worked with people, serving or loving up on them.
Instead, I went for the one that would be quickest to complete, and would make the most money.
But here is the thing - God has gifted us each with certain talents and abilities. He did that because he "knitted you together in your mother's womb" (Ps. 139:16), and created you for a purpose (Eph 2:10).
The key to a fulfilling life is to discern what those God given skills and talents are - and then to make use of them.
The first part is easy enough as there are lots of online tools to help. But the second part means we must recognize that He is the author of our lives, and regardless of whether the skills He gave us prepare us to be a concert pianist, a NFL athlete, a teacher, a house keeper, of any other sort of job - we should lean in - and do it with all our hearts.
"Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ." - Colossians 3:23-24
Finally - I would tell Max the same thing I'll tell you - it's never too late to discover your purpose and to begin the good works He has prepared especially for you!
"And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up." - Galatians 6:9
