ZOMBIES!

A few years ago you couldn’t turn on the television without seeing a show about zombies.

There was “The Walking Dead,” Z Nation,” “The Last of Us” and a slew of others, all featuring a zombified populous, wandering around in search of their next meal.

When I Googled "characteristics of a zombie" there were descriptors like:  Mindless, Aggressive, Anxious, Restless, No Sense of Right and Wrong, Bent on Destruction, Keeps You Awake at Night, Can Turn Others into a Zombie, ...

And quite frankly, as I look around these days, I see a lot of Zombies.

People who do not know God, who are concerned only with the things of the "flesh" - the things of this world.

They are dead men walking - and I am alarmed at how this "Zombie" population appears to be growing.

My pastor is a cool dude.  He recognized the same thing I'm seeing, and a few years ago he did a sermon series that gave "tips" in case of a "Zombie Apocalypse."

I want to share a few of them with you now.

1)  Be Prepared.  Benjamin Franklin once said "Failure to plan is planning to fail," and the Bible teaches us that in order to face evil we must "Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes.  For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the power of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." - Ephesians 6:11-12

2)  Stay Alert.  "Zombies" often get people when they are unaware, so remaining vigilant is key.  The Bible urges us to "Be alert and of sober mind.  Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour." - 1 Peter 5:8.  Do not be flippant.  Recognize that Satan IS out there and his goal is to turn every God-loving Christian into a zombie...

3) Have a Buddy.  Often in the zombie movies you see them chasing a group of people and when one of the people falls, the zombies are instantly upon him/her.  When you are facing evil, having someone you can rely on, someone will help to pick you up when you stumble, is critical.  The Bible says this, "Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil.  For if they fall, one will lift up the other; but woe to one who is alone and falls and does not have another to help." - Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

4) Do Not Get Bit.  When a zombie bites another person, they don't immediately turn into a zombie.  Instead, the bite initiates the transformation.  Sin works a little like that too.  Even a little can begin to corrupt and rot us from the inside out, as its stain begins to take hold and grow.  In Psalm 38 David says this:  "My guilt has overwhelmed me like a burden too heavy to bear.  My wounds fester and are loathsome because of my sinful folly.  I am bowed down and brought very low; all day long I go about mourning.  My back is filled with searing pain; there is no health in my body.  I am feeble and utterly crushed; I groan in anguish of heart." - Psalm 38:4-8

Dear friends, as you go throughout your day today, I urge you to remember these "tips" and I pray that you not be overtaken by "zombies".
